Yujinart
KyotoYujinart begins in Asakusabashi, Tokyo, where Kinu Kameda founded Hyakka in 1927 — a name meaning "a hundred flowers" — as a house devoted to traditional doll-making. Four generations on, it is led by her great-granddaughter, Yu Hatori, who studied clothing history and textiles at Japan Women's University. Hatori works not as a weaver but as a curator, selecting and recomposing a family collection of vintage Nishijin-ori brocade gathered across more than a century. Nishijin-ori, named for the Kyoto district where it has been practiced for over twelve hundred years, carries its intricate jacquard patterns woven directly into the silk; in 1976 it was designated a Traditional Craft of Japan. To own a piece is to hold a fragment of a vanished loom, recomposed to live in a contemporary room.
